Project Overview

Uttishtha Earthquake and Structural Engineers provided structural engineering services for the design and development of a steel warehouse facility in Galt, California.

The project required a robust and efficient structural system capable of accommodating the demands of an industrial warehouse environment while addressing the governing gravity, wind, and seismic loading conditions applicable to the project location.

Our involvement focused on developing a structurally efficient, economical, and constructible steel framing system, with particular emphasis on structural stability, lateral resistance, connection design, and coordination with the architectural and building systems.

Our Scope of Services

Our structural engineering services included:

  • Structural analysis and design of the steel warehouse structure.
  • Development of the overall steel framing and structural grid.
  • Design of primary and secondary steel framing members, including columns, beams, rafters, joists, and bracing systems, as applicable.
  • Design and assessment of the lateral-force-resisting system for wind and seismic actions.
  • Evaluation of load paths and structural stability under governing design conditions.
  • Design of structural connections and review of connection requirements.
  • Design and coordination of foundations and column support conditions.
  • Assessment of applicable wind, seismic, dead, live, and other project-specific loading conditions.
  • Structural modelling and analysis using appropriate computational analysis tools.
  • Coordination of the structural system with architectural, MEP, equipment, and other building requirements.
  • Structural review and coordination of design drawings and technical documentation.
  • Optimisation of member sizes and framing arrangements to improve structural efficiency, constructability, and material utilisation.
  • Technical support in resolving structural coordination and constructability issues during the design process.

Engineering Approach

The design approach focused on developing a simple, efficient, and constructible steel structural system appropriate for a modern warehouse facility.

Particular attention was given to establishing clear and reliable load paths from the roof and building envelope through the primary steel framing and lateral system into the foundations.

Given the project’s location in California, seismic performance and lateral stability were important considerations in developing the structural system. Wind effects, diaphragm behaviour, frame stability, member slenderness, and the interaction between the gravity and lateral systems were considered as part of the overall structural design.

The structural system was also developed with fabrication and erection efficiency in mind, helping to minimise unnecessary complexity while maintaining the required structural performance.

Digital Engineering & Coordination

Modern structural analysis and digital engineering workflows were used to develop and coordinate the structural system.

Structural modelling enabled efficient assessment of load distribution, member forces, stability, and overall building behaviour while facilitating coordination with the wider project team.

The approach also supported the development of coordinated structural documentation and helped identify potential design and constructability issues during the design process.

Value Delivered

Our involvement provided the project team with a technically robust and efficient structural solution tailored to the requirements of a steel warehouse facility in California.

The project demonstrates our capability in delivering industrial and commercial structural engineering services, with particular expertise in steel structures, lateral systems, seismic design, structural optimisation, and multidisciplinary coordination.
